Gas Fireplaces: How to Safely Use Them Without Power

Most gas fireplaces will work with limited features without power. If the power is out, first try to turn your fireplace on like you always have. If it’s a wall switch or a remote, attempt as usual even though the electricity is off.

If that does not work, you need to locate the battery box on your fireplace. If you don’t have your owner’s manual handy, Googling the owner’s manual might be the fastest way to find it. They typically look like some variation of the picture shown below, and they typically take four AA batteries. There are exceptions to this but generally, that is what you’ll find.

The box could be located in a number of places:

  • In a flip-down door under your fireplace.
  • Sitting inside the fireplace next to the gas logs.
  • Inside the box that has the light switch that turns on the fireplace.
  • Buried in the gravel media under your gas logs.

Ventless Gas Fireplaces

First, refer to your owner’s manual for the best information. Every home that has gas should have a carbon monoxide detector, and that necessity is enhanced if the home has a ventless or vent-free fireplace. You should have a qualified service person clean and check the unit every year.

It is critical that the logs are placed exactly as the manufacturer’s manual states. Failure to do this will cause soot damage to your home and can produce carbon monoxide. Typically, the yellow flame will not make contact with any log for an extended period of time while the blue flame may or may not (depending on the model).

Any disturbance of the flame, such as a ceiling fan on high or other fans blowing the flames around, will cause problems.

If your electricity is out, the fireplace will still work, but your blower (if you have one) will not and that is okay! Typically the fireplace should not be run more than 4-6 hours a day, but check your manual for the limits on your specific fireplace.
